White cotton is the traditional cloth of Ethiopia. Women wear white cotton dresses while men don tunics over riding pants. The most distinctive element of local dress, however, is a large white cloth all Ethiopian people wear over their shoulders and/or around the head.

The fine cotton used for these garments is the base material for most Ethiopian textiles, whether shawls, pillow covers or table linens. Weaving is done by hand on wooden or metal looms and cotton is mixed with silk and other fabrics to create amazing patterns and rich designs.
