Bolga Baskets from Elephant Grass

Bolga Basket from Ghana, Africa. The heavy elephant grass used in these "Bolga" baskets makes them strong and flexible. Don't worry if your basket become a little squished because what makes these baskets really unique is that they can be "re-shaped" by wetting them with water and then "massaging" them back into shape with your fist or open hand. With some items, like the fruit basket shown below, the handles can be pushed down into the baskets and pulled out as needed, making it easy to store when not being used for a picnic or trip to the market.

The basket handles are also made from elephant grass and reinforced with a small amount of cured leather that comes from goats raised locally. Goat is the primary source of protein for people in Ghana and families who can afford them raise a handful on their small family farms. With lots of fun colors and many different shapes and sizes to choose from, these baskets can meet lots of different needs. In addition to the baskets shown here we have other styles for sale at One World Projects. Click Buy Now to see more.
